The Cleveland Cavaliers made a low-key but impactful move this offseason, acquiring Lonzo Ball in a trade with the Chicago Bulls.

Cleveland’s bench will benefit greatly from Ball’s playmaking and defensive versatility.

That’s why the Cavaliers now appear to be planning ahead, focusing on his long-term availability to ensure he’s at full strength for a playoff run.

On a recent episode of Wine and Gold Talk, Chris Fedor of Cleveland.com reported that the Cavaliers are discussing the idea of resting Ball during back-to-backs this season.

“I know that the Cavs are having conversations as an organization about no back-to-backs for Lonzo Ball,” Fedor said. “If it’s three games in four nights, be cognizant of that when it comes to Lonzo. If it’s five in seven, be cognizant of that when it comes to Lonzo.”

Being mindful of Ball’s workload throughout the season is a smart strategy by the Cavaliers’ front office.

Ball’s career has been marked by frequent injuries that have affected his ability to stay on the court. He’s appeared in just 35 games over the past three seasons due to a lingering knee injury.

If the Cavaliers commit to resting Ball during back-to-backs, they’ll be relying heavily on their depth to carry the load. The ability of Cleveland’s supporting guards to step up and maintain stability will be crucial to staying competitive throughout the regular season.
